Hi everyone, I would just like to say welcome to my Mini Pop And Twist Cards post! Earlier this year in April I attended OnStage and for this I created some cute Mini Pop and Twist Cards as swaps which you can see in my Onstage April 2017 post. In the last couple of months I have been approached for measurements for these cute little treasures and so I created this post to give you all exactly that. I originally launched this blog (Secretly Scrapbooking Blog Launch) with the full sized version of this card and I find them really fun to make so I hope that you have as much fun as I did.
Note: This blog post contains products purchased from Stampin’ Up!®. Latest Catalogue is here.
The design is inspired by the YouTube clip presented by JanB (Jan Brown) for the Pop & Twist Card which I adapted and cut down to make my mini version. As many of the products I used for my first release of this card made it into the retired list I decided to create another one using items from the recently released Holiday catalog.
For this Mini Pop & Twist Card I used a combination of Basic Black cardstock, Whisper White cardstock, Glimmer Paper Silver cardstock and Merry Music Specialty DSP. Decorating the card was achieved using the Hometown Greetings Edgelits, Hearts Come Home Stamp Set, Santa's Suit Stamp Set, Stampin' Emboss Powder Silver and matching 1/8 inch (3.2mm) Silver Ribbon.
So to make this Mini Pop & Twist Card you should first cut out the DSP and cardstock to the required sizes. The following core parts are required:
- 1 x Basic Black cardstock 5-1/2 x 2 inches for the core card
- 1 x Basic Black cardstock 4 x 1-3/4 inches for the folding mechanism
- 1 x Basic Black cardstock 5-1/2 x 1-3/4 inches for the four (4) panel section
- 1 x Ribbon roughly 11 inches long
To decorate the front of the card as per the design you'll need:
- 1 x Glimmer Paper Silver cardstock 1-7/8 x 2-5/8 inches for the base layer
- 1 x Merry Music Specialty DSP 1-3/4 x 2-1/2 inches for the front DSP layer
- 1 x Whisper White cardstock 1-3/4 x 1-3/16 inches for the sentiment backing piece
- 1 x Basic Black cardstock 1-3/4 x 1 inches for the sentiment piece
To decorate the inside of the card as per the design you'll need:
- 1 x Basic Black cardstock 1-7/8 x 1-3/4 inches for the top decoration pieces
- 1 x Whisper White cardstock 1-7/8 x 1-3/4 inches for the bottom decoration pieces
- 4 x Merry Music Specialty DSP 1-5/8 x 1-1/4 inches for the four (4) panel section decoration pieces
Now that we have our parts we can start by scoring the appropriate card sections. First score the core card parallel to the short edge at 2-3/4 inches and fold this one way. Now we can score the four (4) panel section card at 1-3/8 inch intervals parallel to the short edge, so at 1-3/8, 2-3/4, 4-1/8 inches. Lastly we need to score the folding mechanism using the one end as a reference, scoring diagonally on the short edge from top to bottom from 1-1/8 to 2-7/8 (suggest marking these measurements in pencil to help line them up). Then score diagonally using the same measurements but from bottom to top to create an "X" in the centre of the card. Finally score the card parallel to the long edge at 7/8 inches. It should look like this:
Now that the scoring is complete fold the core card toward the indent created from the score and use a bone folder to sharpen the fold. For the four (4) panel section card fold the card towards the center indent, fold the other sections in the other direction sharpening all the folds using a bone folder, the result should appear when folded as one section folded back and forth. The folding mechanism can now be folded last and requires the card to be folded along the long edge score sharpening the fold, the diagonals should be folded back the opposite direction to create a triangle in the center when folded. With the folding mechanism folded as below run your bone folder along the edges of the triangle to sharpen these folds as this helps the card sit as flat as possible.
The card can now be constructed in two separate ways, one is to have the ribbon attach at the bottom of the card vertically or to wrap around horizontally. If using the ribbon vertically it should be glued to the core card inside directly about 2/8 inches from the folding mechanism centered vertically and will sit behind the internal top and bottom decoration panels. If you are having the ribbon horizontal it will sit behind the internal bottom decoration panel about 1/4 inch from the base of the core card. Something else to keep in mind is that if you'd like your card to feel more sturdy then cut another base layer and DSP layer for the rear of the card.
In the crease of the core card mark the halfway point with a pencil, this is needed to line up the folding mechanism. Using a strong adhesive, recommending Fast Fuse here, glue the triangle sections on the back of the folding mechanism to the core card at the mid point you marked just ever so slightly below the crease on the bottom half of the core card. Fold the top down onto the folding mechanism and rub the front and back of the card to help encourage a good bond with the adhesive. Open and close the card several times to make sure it opens and closes correctly, rechecking the folds. You should now attach the folding mechanism to the four (4) panel section by using the same adhesive, connect the bottom left section of the folding mechanism to the left most panel and the top right section of the folding mechanism to the right most panel, the glued sections are roughly 5/8 wide by 7/8 high.
You should now attach all decorations to the front and, if you chose to add layers to the rear of the card, the back of the core card as well. Take note that while we are not adding the internal decoration panels if you have chosen to do your own design that the top and bottom internal decorations need to be flush (no bumps) as this can interfere with the card folding mechanism working correctly. Next you should decorate the four (4) panel section.
Finally attach your ribbon followed by your top and bottom core card decoration panels to cover the ribbon and you are done! Congratulations on your new Mini Pop & Twist Card...now it's time to make another cause they are just so addictive!
So how did I decorate mine? I used the "Merry and Bright" sentiment from the Heart Comes Home Stamp Set with the Stampin' Emboss Powder Silver (Note: VersaMark Ink must be used with embossing powders). For the inside I continued the use of the Stampin' Emboss Powder Silver for the houses, trees and stars on the four panel and "Santa's Sleigh" on the top panel. I used the Hometown Greetings Edgelits to cut out stars in the top panel to get glimmer silver stars. I then used the Santa's Suit Stamp Set for the sentiment on the inside bottom panel.
Here is the end result when the card is open:

I hope this post has been helpful in creating your own Mini Pop & Twist Card, I'm sure you could make them almost any size. I have listed the YouTube link below that I used as a basis for the Mini Pop & Twist Card:
Thanks for reading my post and please leave a comment if you found this post helpful and maybe to help me discover what you ended up making. Now it's time for me to go back to Secretly Scrapbooking!
